I prefer to spend my time with people like me. The more like me a person is, the more I like to spend with him, or her. I like to spend time with people who think like I do, who have similar goals, and see the world in similar ways. With Luck I found someone very similar to and she agreed to spend the rest of her life with me. There are still differences, but they are differences we live with.
As I have aged, I have always tried to surround myself with people like me. At different points in my life, different things have carried greater weight. As I get older, I meet more people, and I realise that some of the people I used to spend a good deal of time with are no longer that similar. Not because we have changed that much, but because our priorities have changed, and we have met others that more closely match.
Also, as priorities changed, some people who matched well in the past match even more so now, and I find myself wanting to spend more time with these people.
As my life gets more complicated, some people fade from my life, all for various reasons, and only those who match well do I put forth extra effort to keep around. By this point, in my life I am fairly set in who I am, and hold on to those (like my wife) who match closest, and wanting to bring some closer.
Remember, it's never you, it's never me, it's always 'us' that brings us closer or pulls us apart.
